Botox is the brand name for the Botulinum toxin which is a chemical produced from Clostridium bacteria. When Botox is injected into a muscle it causes the muscle to become weakened, or inactivated. It stops the muscle from functioning by blocking the chemical messages sent to the nerve from the brain.
Botox is most commonly known for it’s uses for lines and wrinkles, but it has been used for over a decade in the aid of many medical conditions such as Blepharospasm (continuous squinting to the eye) cervical dystonia, cerebal palsy and hemifacial spasm.

By repeated use of the facial muscles throughout our lifetime the skin is creased in the areas of the greatest use. The reduction in the production of collagen and elastin causes these creases to become permanent and cause wrinkles. By injecting botox into these areas the muscles are no longer causing as much movement, the skin becomes less creased and is allowed to recover causing the lines to dramatically soften or even fade away entirely.
The Botox treatment for lines and wrinkles usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. Dr Brookshaw will ask you to use certain muscles in the face, and assess how they work. An extremely fine needle is then used to inject the Botox in the appropriate area. The injection may cause some slight swelling and redness, which will resolve itself in 2-4 hours. The results are not immediate; it will take between 7-14 days before the Botox takes full effect. The effects usually last between 3-6 months. Side effects from Botox are extremely rare.
The initial consultation is free. Botox treatments are £295 per area of the face; a full written cost will be given at your free consultation. (RB price at present) |
